What is a tensile testing machine?

Image
What is a tensile testing machine? A tensile testing machine performs the most fundamental and common types of mechanical testing. A tensile test applies tensile (pulling) force to a material and measures the specimen's response to the stress. By doing this, tensile tests determine how strong a material is and how much it can elongate... Tensile testing machine , also known as tension testing, is a fundamental materials science and engineering test in which a sample is subjected to a controlled tension until failure. Properties that are directly measured via a tensile testing machine are ultimate tensile strength, breaking strength, maximum elongation and reduction in area. From these measurements the following properties can also be determined: Young's modulus, , yield strength, and strain-hardening characteristics. Uniaxial tensile testing machine is the most commonly used for obtaining the mechanical characteristics of isotropic materials. The tensile testing machine  pr...

Universal Testing Machine: Learn About Components & Functions

Image
Universal Testing Machine: Learn About Components & Functions A  universal testing machine (UTM), also known as a universal tester,[1] materials testing machine or materials test frame. The term ‘universal’ usually means that it is versatile enough that it can be used in all applications.  It means that our machines can be simply modified to fit the unique testing needs and requirements of your company. Components of Universal Testing Machine Two primary components make up a universal testing machine as follow: Loading Unit Control Unit Loading Unit The loading unit controls how the test specimen is set up and how much force is applied. The table and crosshead on the left unit make up the loading unit. Control unit is the right component with a load indicator layout. The following components make up a UTM's loading unit: Load Frame A universal testing device's load frame can be constructed using a single support or two supports. The upper ...

Description and Uses: Rockwell Hardness Testing Machine

Image
A  Rockwell hardness testing machine  is used for the determination of material hardness based on the depth of penetration of the indenter at a given applied load. This is one of the major techniques used to get the hardness values of materials like metal, plastic, and ceramics. A typical model will consist of a test head with an indenter, a load application mechanism, and a dial instrument or digital readout indicating the penetration depth. The indenter is most commonly a diamond cone or a hardened steel ball, depending on the test material. The worker mounts the specimen on the anvil and applies the load through a lever or motor drive scheme onto the indenter to conduct the test. Afterwards, this is allowed to penetrate the material under consideration for a specified duration, after which the load is removed, and then the depth of such penetration is measured and recorded. The Rockwell hardness test finds wide application in quality control and testing of materials ...
